Mr. Clement Isong retired from the Total Group as Deputy Vice President for Southern Africa in June 2017 after 29 years of service. He joined the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) as Chief Operating Officer in October 2017 and became the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer in April 2018. In January 2024, MOMAN rebranded and became the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), with Clement still at the helm. Clement is responsible for leading MEMAN’s efforts to engage with the government and other principal stakeholders to rebuild a sustainable downstream petroleum industry.
Based in Johannesburg from 2013 to 2017, his last assignment with the Total Group as Deputy Vice President included developing Total affiliates in the Southern Africa region. He also served as the interface between the Head Office Departments in Paris and Total downstream affiliates in Southern Africa, including Total South Africa, Total Mozambique, Total Malawi, Total Zimbabwe, Total Zambia, and others. He led efforts to establish an affiliate in Angola and was in constant contact with the governments in these countries to bring Total’s downstream expertise in oil and gas to their benefit and to develop local citizens’ competencies and skills in the oil sector. Additionally, he was the General Manager of the Total Marketing and Services Competency Centre (PTY), a center of expertise in all aspects of the downstream business based in Johannesburg, South Africa, serving the African region.
Previously, between 2009 and 2013, as the Head of Sustainable Development for the Africa Middle East Division based in Paris, France, he oversaw Total Group’s downstream sustainable development activities in Total affiliates in 54 countries. He constantly traveled and engaged with international institutions such as the World Bank and the World Health Organization, as well as many governments, major multinational corporations within and outside the petroleum industry, and civil society organizations, to bring funding, expertise, and collaboration to policies geared towards human sustainable development in Africa and the Middle East.
Between 2006 and 2009, he was the Managing Director of Total Malawi, where he oversaw the acquisition and integration of Total Malawi with Mobil Malawi. While in this role, he was elected the Chairman of Petroleum Importers Limited, collaborating with the Government of Malawi to review and restructure the petroleum products import system for the country.
Following the group merger between Total, Fina, and Elf Groups in 2001, the Africa Middle East Division of Total’s downstream business set up a team of experts in collaboration with the consulting firm McKinsey & Co. to identify best practices from all three companies and build policies, strategies, business models, and digital tools for optimizing its business in the Africa Middle East region. Clement represented Total Nigeria in this project in the retail and new business teams. He later led efforts to implement these digital tools and best practices throughout the business value chain in Total Nigeria.
He has also served Total Nigeria in many other roles, including General Manager Administration, General Manager Strategy, Regional Manager Mid-Western Region, and Company Secretary/Legal Adviser.
Mr. Isong, therefore, has significant experience in the downstream oil industry and has traveled extensively in Africa, the Middle East, the United States, and Europe for professional purposes. He has acquired a vast portfolio of digital tools, processes, organizational models, and best practices. He is personally motivated by implementing sustainable systems and business models for the development and growth of the downstream oil industry in Africa as a whole and in Nigeria in particular.
As MEMAN’s Executive Secretary and CEO, he is responsible for leading MEMAN’s efforts to engage with the government and other key stakeholders to rebuild and institutionalize a sustainable petroleum downstream industry in Nigeria.
